        "content": "<p>DPR protest cause Rp 2 billion damage<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The chaotic but successful five-day student<br>\ndemonstration at the House of Representatives last week left a<br>\ntrail of structural damage worth about Rp 2 billion (US$167,000),<br>\nofficials said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>But they blamed outsiders seeking personal gain, rather than<br>\nthe proreform students.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are sure irresponsible individuals infiltrated the<br>\nstudents,\" Deputy House Speaker Abdul Gafur said after touring<br>\nthe complex with House Secretary-General Afif Ma'roef.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 5,000 students from various provinces began their<br>\nrally at the House on May 18. Their number swelled until the<br>\nmilitary forcibly dispersed them early Saturday, two days after<br>\nSoeharto's fall from grace.<\/p>\n<p>According to the official list, the main entrance gate, a<br>\nprimary marble stairway, a VIP toilet for the president and vice<br>\npresident and glass walls near the information desk were badly<br>\ndamaged. Filing cabinets, an automatic door and an emergency exit<br>\ndoor were damaged and documents on the history of Indonesian<br>\nparliament to be transferred to the Indonesian Archive Center<br>\nwere burned.<\/p>\n<p>Workers from the Jakarta Sanitation Agency have, since<br>\nSaturday, removed mountains of garbage, erased antigovernment<br>\ngraffiti, and taken off stickers and posters hung all over the<br>\nplace.<\/p>\n<p>The fountain, which demonstrators turned into a mini swimming<br>\npool was cleaned and its water replaced, Antara reported.<\/p>\n<p>House employees returned to work yesterday but few House<br>\nmembers were seen back at work. The Risanti cafeteria, which is<br>\nreported to have lost equipment and Rp 1 million in cash during<br>\nthe student occupation of the House, remained closed.<\/p>\n<p>Although activities have returned to normal, the complex is<br>\nstill under tight guard. Troops and security guards checked all<br>\nvisitors' identification at the entrance and exit gates to the<br>\ncompound.<\/p>\n<p>Security personnel were seen inside the buildings and armored<br>\nvehicles, tanks and military trucks were parked at strategic<br>\npoints.
