Indonesian lawmakers have called for using idle state-owned land to build subsidized housing, aiming to address the national housing backlog of 9.9 million households. The proposal seeks to lower construction costs and improve access to affordable, decent homes for low-income groups, in line with presidential directives to expand homeownership for informal sector workers and the poor.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - DPR member Sudjatmiko has urged the government
to utilise idle state land for building subsidized housing for
low-income households (MBR).

He stated that optimising state-owned land could address the national
housing backlog and reduce housing prices while accelerating the
provision of affordable housing.

“The utilisation of state land assets must be prioritised for the
people’s benefit, especially in building homes for MBR. By optimising
state land, construction costs can be reduced, making housing more
affordable for the general public,” Sudjatmiko said in a written
statement on Thursday (28 May 2026).

Such land could support housing development, particularly in urban
areas and economic buffer zones.

“The national housing backlog remains a major challenge for the
government. Therefore, accelerating the construction of homes for
low-income groups is essential to ensure the public has access to
decent, healthy, and affordable housing,” Sudjatmiko added.

According to BPS data, Indonesia’s housing backlog currently stands
at approximately 9.9 million households.

“Accelerating the construction of people’s housing is a tangible
solution to reduce social inequality and improve the quality of life for
Indonesians,” Sudjatmiko noted.

“Housing is not merely a structure but the foundation of family
welfare. Therefore, meeting the need for decent housing for the public
must be a collective priority,” he concluded.

According to Maruarar, the policy aligns with President Prabowo’s
directive to increase homeownership access for low-income groups,
including informal sector workers.
",
