Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of Commission III of the Indonesian House\nof Representatives (DPR RI) Abdullah has stressed that the public must\nnot be intimidated by individuals claiming to be debt collectors,\nresponding to a case involving two men who allegedly intimidated a\nToyota Fortuner owner in Bekasi, West Java.<\/p>\n
He urged the police to intervene in the matter, from examining the\nemployment status of the two men to thoroughly investigating the motive\nand purpose of their actions.<\/p>\n
\u201cLooking at the chronology circulating, I urge the police to\nimmediately apprehend and examine the two suspected perpetrators,\u201d\nAbdullah said in Jakarta on Friday.<\/p>\n
According to him, if a vehicle is suspected of being the proceeds of\ncrime, the resolution must follow applicable legal mechanisms. In a\nstate governed by law, he said, no party may act as if they possess\ntheir own legal authority.<\/p>\n
He added that the police must also clarify the employment status of\nthe two men to ascertain whether they are genuine debt collectors or\nmerely using the profession as a cover for actions that harm the\npublic.<\/p>\n
If they are indeed debt collectors, Abdullah urged the police to\ninvestigate the finance company or leasing firm that employs them. Law\nenforcement, he said, must not stop at the field perpetrators but must\nalso reach the parties who assigned them and benefited from their\nactions.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf they dare not even show their identity, the public has every\nright to question who they really are and for whose interests they are\nacting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he stated that citizens who become victims are entitled\nto legal protection and to claim compensation if they are proven to have\nsuffered material or immaterial losses. The state must be present to\nprovide legal certainty and restore the rights of victims.<\/p>\n
He therefore called on the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to\ntighten supervision of debt collector activities. He proposed the\ncreation of a digital database of debt collectors that the public can\naccess to verify their identity, legality, and the finance companies\nthat employ them.<\/p>\n
\u201cDebt collectors must also be required to wear official uniforms,\ncarry easily verifiable ID cards, and hold standardised certification.\nOfficial debt collectors must be easily recognisable, easily verifiable,\nand easily held accountable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
