DPR has done little to eradicate KKN: Mega<\/p>\n

President Megawati Soekarnoputri has expressed concern over
\nthe lack of support from the House of Representatives for her
\nefforts to eradicate corruption, collusion and nepotism in the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the Multipurpose Cooperative of Mutual Assistance
\n(Kosgoro) Hayono Isman said, after meeting Megawati, that she had
\ncomplained about the lengthy discussion of many bills to promote
\nthe eradication of corruption.<\/p>\n
\"The President cited as an example that the long debate over
\nthe money laundering bill indicated that the government lacked
\nsupport from the House to stop such practices,\" Hayono said.<\/p>\n
According to Hayono, the President underlined that she only
\nhad two and a half years before the next general election in 2004
\nto improve the regulations and a system to optimize the
\neradication of such practices, which had been the main factor
\nbehind the hardships currently facing the country.<\/p>\n
\"From the discussion, the President expressed her strong
\nintention to concentrate on building a better system for the
\ncountry and leave the general election in the hands of the
\npeople,\" Hayono said.<\/p>\n
This is the second time that Megawati criticized the House for
\nits performance as a legislative body in setting regulations for
\nthe country.<\/p>\n
In her speech in front of National Resilience Institute
\n(Lemhannas) course participants last month, she said that the
\ninternal conflicts of interest at the House had slowed down the
\nreform movement.<\/p>\n
At Monday's meeting, Hayono, a former minister during the
\npresidency of Soeharto, sent a strong message to the President
\nthat the political process should not interfere with legal
\nprocesses when investigating corruption cases.<\/p>\n
\"We support the government's effort to eradicate corruption,
\nbut we consider that politicking in the House should not hamper
\nthe legal process,\" said Hayono, who leads the organization that
\nused to be one of the Golkar Party's political instruments.<\/p>\n
At present, Golkar Party chairman Akbar Tandjung is facing a
\ngreat political challenge as the House consultative body agreed
\non Monday to set a schedule to discuss the establishment of a
\nspecial committee to investigate a financial scandal involving
\nthe State Logistics Agency (Bulog), in which he has been
\nimplicated.<\/p>\n
\"The House should concentrate on deliberating the drafts, not
\non the establishment of many special committees to investigate a
\nnumber of legal cases,\" he said, even though he refused to admit
\nthat he conveyed the official line of the Golkar party.<\/p>\n
When asked what was the President's reaction to his
\nsuggestion, Hayono said, \"The President did not say a word about
\nit.\"<\/p>\n
