DPR asked to evaluate Aceh operation<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: The country's largest Muslim organization, Nadhlatul
\nUlama (NU), has called on the House of Representatives to
\nevaluate the military operation in Aceh.<\/p>\n
Also, noted rights activist Todung Mulya Lubis has urged the
\ngovernment to end the military offensive that has left almost 700
\nsuspected rebels dead.<\/p>\n
The chairman of NU's chapter in East Java, Ali Maschan Moesa,
\nsaid the government should focus on humanitarian and law
\nenforcement operations in Aceh, and persuade rebels to lay down
\ntheir arms and return to their homes.<\/p>\n
"I suggest the House stop the assault and try persuasion, like
\nhumanitarian and welfare operations," he said during a discussion
\non Friday.<\/p>\n
He said the government must win the hearts of the Acehnese by
\ngiving them "real autonomy, instead of 'regional-ruler
\nautonomy'".<\/p>\n
Todung agreed with Ali, saying the three-month military
\noperation in Aceh had gone on "long enough".<\/p>\n
"The House must evaluate the operation. They should not permit
\nthe military operation in Aceh to continue for the sake of the
\n2004 elections or political interests. The interests of the

JAKARTA: President Megawati Soekarnoputri inaugurated on
\nFriday the Samudraraksa boat, which is scheduled to sail the
\n"Cinnamon Route" from Indonesia to Ghana, during a ceremony at
\nthe Ancol port.<\/p>\n
The Samudraraksa expedition, which will include stops in
\nSeychelles, Madagascar, Cape Town and Ghana, is expected to be
\ncompleted in December.<\/p>\n
The route was used in the cinnamon trade in the past.<\/p>\n
The traditional wooden boat was designed by marine
\narchaeological expert Nick Burningham and made by Indonesian boat
\ncraftsman Asad Abdullah. The size of the boat is similar to
\ntraditional boats from the 8th century, but is equipped with
\nmodern navigational equipment.<\/p>\n
As many as 10 sailors, half women, will take part in the
\nexpedition, which will be led by I Gusti Putu Ngurah Sedana.

JAKARTA: The Indonesia Nationalist Alliance Party registered on
\nFriday with the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights for an
\nadministration screening ahead of the 2004 elections.<\/p>\n
Party chairman Hadidjojo Nitimihardjo said his party was ready
\nto contest the upcoming elections.<\/p>\n
"We expect to win 3 percent of the vote," he said.<\/p>\n
Only parties that earn 2 percent of the vote or more in the
\n2004 elections will be eligible to contest the 2009 elections.<\/p>\n
The alliance party was created from 11 parties that took part

JAKARTA: The People's Core Nationalist Party (PNIK) 1927 named
\non Friday former minister Siswono Yudhohusodo its presidential
\ncandidate for the 2004 elections.<\/p>\n
Siswono, who is also the chairman of the Indonesian Farmers
\nSolidarity Union, said he was honored to be selected as PNIK's
\ncandidate, and added that another six parties had asked him to be
\ntheir candidates.<\/p>\n
He said he would not join any political party despite the
\noffers from the political parties to become their presidential
\ncandidates.<\/p>\n
Siswono said he was working on his platform. He did elaborate
\non whether he had agreed to be nominated as a presidential
