Dozens of houses razed by fire<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): At least 71 houses in a slum area in Warakas,
\nNorth Jakarta, were razed by fire on Sunday, rendering hundreds
\nof people homeless.<\/p>\n
No fatalities were reported.<\/p>\n
The fire, which started at about 2 a.m., originated from a
\nhouse owned by Kasimin, 36, on Jl. Warakas, Panggo subdistrict.<\/p>\n
\"An electrical short circuit on the second floor of the house
\nis believed to have caused the fire,\" M. Irawan, a police officer
\nat North Jakarta Police station, said.<\/p>\n
Irawan said the fire quickly spread to other houses, most of
\nwhich were made from wood.<\/p>\n
The North Jakarta Fire Department deployed 15 fire engines to
\nthe fire site, located under high voltage cables.<\/p>\n
\"We arrived late because the residents were late to call us.
\nThe fire was already big by the time we got there,\" Suparman, a
\nfirefighter, was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
Suparman said they also had difficulty extinguishing the fire
\nbecause fire engines could not reach the location due to the
\narea's narrow alleyways.<\/p>\n
He said the firefighters were forced to join together several
\nfire hoses to reach the fire location.<\/p>\n
A fire engine also sprayed water from the Cawang-Tanjung Priok
\nelevated toll road.<\/p>\n
The firemen also had difficulty fighting the fire because
\nresidents grabbed the fire hose in panic, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Unfortunately they did not know how to extinguish the fire
\nsystematically, thereby making it difficult to put out,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The firefighters finally managed to extinguish the fire at
\n4:50 a.m. The total losses caused by the fire are being
