Downer to visit Indonesia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade
\nAlexander Downer will add to the list of dignitaries who have
\nvisited Indonesia over the past two weeks with his scheduled
\nSunday arrival for a three-day visit.<\/p>\n
In a press release received here yesterday, Downer described
\nthe visit as an important opportunity to personally extend the
\nAustralian government's support of the Indonesian government as
\nit implements the measures set out by the International Monetary
\nFund (IMF) package which was announced last week.<\/p>\n
\"Australia, as a friend and close neighbor, has significant
\nbilateral and regional interests in Indonesia overcoming its
\ncurrent economic difficulties,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Downer said that during the visit he would also discuss the
\nimpact of the drought in Irian Jaya and further options for
\nAustralian assistance.<\/p>\n
President Soeharto promised wide-ranging and painful reforms
\nin a new deal with IMF.<\/p>\n
The reform program is part of a three-year IMF standby
\narrangement giving the government access to US$43 billion in
\nfunds to restore international confidence and arrest the slide of
\nthe rupiah against the U.S. dollar.<\/p>\n
The reforms, stipulated in a 13-document personally signed by
\nSoeharto, came amid a slew of foreign dignitaries arriving here
\nto talk with Indonesian officials about the economic crisis. (10)<\/p>",
