Doulos Foundation may rebuild complex: Accord<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Doulos Foundation and residents of Cipayung,
\nEast Jakarta, signed an agreement on Friday afternoon declaring
\nthat the foundation could rebuild the complex, which was razed in
\nan arson attack on Dec. 15, soon after it secures a permit from
\nthe city administration.<\/p>\n
The agreement was made in a meeting between representatives of
\nthe residents of Cipayung, local Muslim ulemas, the East Jakarta
\npolice and the Cipayung district administration. The meeting was
\nheld on the second floor of the foundations's main building,
\nwhich could still be used as only half of its roof was destroyed
\nby the fire.<\/p>\n
The foundation's chairman, Royandi Hutasoit, expressed hope
\nthat the permit would be issued soon, so that it could build
\nsemipermanent buildings to shelter the school of theology
\nstudents, who now are spread in different places.<\/p>\n
Hutasoit said Governor Sutiyoso promised to help him solve the
\nstudents' problem.<\/p>\n
"Governor Sutiyoso told the student victims in a visit to the
\nIndonesian Christian University (UKI) Hospital in Cawang, East
\nJakarta, that he would contact me to discuss this matter,"
\nHutasoit told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Earlier on Thursday, East Jakarta Mayor Andi Mappaganty said
\nthat his office would not allow the Doulos Foundation to rebuild
\nthe complex unless it could obtain required permits issued by the
\ncity administration.<\/p>\n
"They must meet the city administration's regulations on land
\nusage in the Cipayung district," the mayor said at City Hall
\nafter a meeting with Governor Sutiyoso.<\/p>\n
Hutasoit said the meeting was initially meant as a silaturahmi
\n(friendship) forum between the foundation and the residents in
\nthe neighborhood.<\/p>\n
"But the residents' representatives, led by local Muslim
\nleader Hamdi, wanted the compromise to be adopted in a written
\nagreement," Hutasoit said.<\/p>\n
The agreement regretted the mob attack and urged residents not
\nto take the law into their own hands, but create a peaceful
\nsituation in the area.<\/p>\n
It also included a commitment from the Doulos foundation that
\nit would not take revenge on the residents.<\/p>\n
Chief of the Cipayung police subprecinct Capt. Ngatimin said
\nthe police would guarantee the security of all residents.<\/p>\n
Conversion<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, National Police chief Gen. Roesmanhadi upheld on
\nFriday the version of Jakarta Police chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho
\nDjajoesman in connection with the latest results of a police
\ninvestigation on the arson attack.<\/p>\n
"What I know, you people already know. It is no different than
\nwhat was told to you by city police chief (Noegroho). There are
\n11 suspects, and it does have to do with conversion of religion,"
\nRoesmanhadi said, following a closed meeting on Friday with top
\npolice officers, where results were formally revealed by the
\ninvestigators.<\/p>\n
"One of the main suspects is Sudirman, who coordinated the
\nburning," Roesmanhadi said.<\/p>\n
The four-star general began the proceedings of the meeting at
\n8:30 a.m., and it ended at least two hours later.<\/p>\n
The meeting was attended by Col. Alex Bambang Riatmodjo, four
\ncity police detectives and several top National Police officers.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Roesmanhadi had said that things revealed in the
\narson included criminal and political aspects of the attack.<\/p>\n
"The criminal side is quite obvious, since burning and
\ncreating such violent chaos is a crime. The political side will
\nalso be revealed on Friday," he said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The arson attack by some 300 people on the Christian-owned
\ncomplex in Cipayung, East Jakarta, on Dec. 15 shocked many people
\nacross the capital. The incident cost the life of one man and
\ninjured dozens of others.<\/p>\n
Police have steadfastly guarded the identities of the 11
\nsuspects and the motives of the attack on the 2.7-hectare site
\nowned by the Doulos Foundation.<\/p>\n
In an unrelated development, a residential house on Jl. Condet
\nRaya No. 17, Bale Kambang area, East Jakarta, which had regularly
\nheld a Christian religious service once a week, was attacked by
\ndozens of residents on Thursday night at 10.30 p.m.<\/p>\n
The house owner, Saut Moses Hasibuan, and wife, Naomi Sinaga,
\nsaid the mob started throwing firecrackers and stones at the
\nhouse while they were waiting for the police, representatives of
\nthe residents and the area administration.<\/p>\n
"We were contacted by the subdistrict head, Roshid, about the
\nmeeting to discuss our appeal for a Christmas celebration permit.
\nThe meeting was scheduled for 10 p.m., but they didn't show up
\nuntil the attack occurred half an hour later," Naomi told
\nreporters at the scene.<\/p>\n
The attackers used stones and logs found in the house's front
\nyard to smash cars and windows of the house, which also
\nfunctioned as an office of a contractor company PT Santosa Asih
\nJaya, owned by the family.<\/p>\n
No fatalities were reported in the attack, but the main gate
\nfell to the ground and several windows and windows of three cars
\nparked in the yard were damaged. One of the cars' radio was also
