Dossiers prepared for trial of film artist Ria Irawan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta High Prosecutor's Office will soon
\npresent the dossiers in the case of starlet Ria Irawan to
\ndetermine whether she can be brought to court.<\/p>\n
"After we received the dossiers for the second time from the
\npolice recently, we sent them directly to the City High
\nProsecutor's Office," chief of the South Jakarta Prosecutor's
\nOffice, T. Derikansyah, told The Jakarta Post and Republika here
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
He said the presentation of the dossiers will be carried out
\nby the city high prosecutor chief at his office.<\/p>\n
"I do not know when it will be held, but we'll invite
\nreporters to cover it," Derikansyah said.<\/p>\n
The dossiers state that the 24-year-old actress violated at
\nleast two articles of the criminal code in connection with the
\ndeath of a young businessman in her house.<\/p>\n
Rifardi Soekarnoputra, 22, was found dead at the movie star's
\nhome in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, on Jan. 12.<\/p>\n
Police said that Ria failed to report to the police the
\npossession and use of illegal drugs by the deceased. She is also
\nalleged to have disposed of vital material evidence that could
\nhave given clues to the death of the young married man.<\/p>\n
When asked to comment on the presentation of the case by the
\nprosecutors, a reliable police source who is close to the case
\nsaid he welcomes the plan.<\/p>\n
"It is no longer a new method to us," the source, who
\nrequested anonymity, said.<\/p>\n
Such a presentation is normally designed to obtain detailed
\ndata of a case before the dossiers are handed over to the court,
\nthe source added.<\/p>\n
"If the prosecutors then find discrepancies or irregularities
\non the dossiers during the presentation, then the prosecutors
\nthemselves who must complete or improve them as required by law,"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
By law, if necessary, the prosecutors are allowed to question
\nwitnesses before sending the dossiers to the court for trial, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"The prosecutors are even allowed to stop the indictment
\nprocess if they find that the dossiers lack substantial legal
\nelements," he said.<\/p>\n
The source also explained that the South Jakarta prosecutor's
\noffice had returned the dossiers twice to the police, asking them
\nto complete them.<\/p>\n
"When they returned the dossiers for the second time to us, we
\nsent them back without making any changes, as we believe we have
\nalready completed everything needed," he said.<\/p>\n
"We are wondering why they didn't stop the indictment process
\nas allowed by the law."<\/p>\n
The source, however, strongly believes that Ria will be found
\nguilty.<\/p>\n
Ria, he said, has admitted that she knew the deceased consumed
\nillegal drugs. She also admitted that she tampered with and
\ndisposed of substantial material evidence believed to have caused
\nthe death of Rifardi.<\/p>\n
It will be the responsibility of the prosecutors whether or
\nnot to arraign her in court, he said.<\/p>\n
Ria might face a one-year jail term or a maximum fine of Rp 1
\nmillion ($472) for failing to report Rifardi's possession and use
\nof the illegal drugs to the police.<\/p>\n
She may also face another maximum prison term of four years
\nfor allegedly destroying evidence which was believed to have
