Dorodjatun named ambassador to U.S.<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas said
\nyesterday that Washington has approved economist Dorodjatun
\nKuntjoro-Jakti as the next Indonesian ambassador to the United
\nStates.<\/p>\n
Alatas, who is currently in New York to take over the
\nleadership of the Group of 77, was quoted by Antara as saying
\nthat it is now a matter of waiting for his official installment
\nby President Soeharto.<\/p>\n
But Alatas said that the official installment may take
\nsometime given the president's tight schedule. Alatas added that
\nit is also rare for just one ambassador to be installed during a
\nceremony.<\/p>\n
Dorodjatun, 58, replaces Arifin Siregar who has served as
\nambassador in Washington since 1993. Arifin ended his term in
\nDecember.<\/p>\n
While waiting for Dorodjatun to be officially installed,
\ndiplomat Nazaruddin Nasution is the ad interim head of the
\nembassy in Washington.<\/p>\n
Dorodjatun is no stranger to the United States. He earned his
\ndoctorate in economics from the University of California in
\nBerkeley in 1980.<\/p>\n
Known for his sharp thoughts on the economy, Dorodjatun's
\narticles have been published extensively in various newspapers.<\/p>\n
Born in Rangkasbitung, West Java, Dorodjatun currently holds
\nthe post as dean of the school of economics at the University of
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
When contacted here last night, Dorodjatun was not available
