Doomsday near?<\/p>\n
What can be done and who can ease the pain of the victims of
\nthe recent riots?<\/p>\n
I believe that the local government should bear responsibility
\nfor the losses suffered by the local residents (Indonesians of
\nChinese descent as well as Chinese residents) because the
\ngovernment is responsible for law and order including the safety
\nof all citizens.<\/p>\n
Although losses of lives and losses of women's dignity can
\nhardly be compensated for, material losses like houses and cars
\nburned and properties looted, are but a few examples of what the
\ngovernment can and I believe should compensate for.<\/p>\n
By doing so, we would be giving them evidence that they are
\nbeing taken care of and hope that not only those who left the
\ncountry out of fear will come back but will also bring back with
\nthem the foreign currencies sent abroad.<\/p>\n
This would also show the world that our government, although
\nburdened with a very difficult economy, is still trying to uphold
\nlaw and order.<\/p>\n
Of course it should be losses that can be documented, and at
\nreasonable prices.<\/p>\n
It would be an additional burden for the government but it
\nwould be an investment for a quick recovery of our political and
\neconomic problems. Moreover, compensation could be paid in
\ninstallments if necessary.<\/p>\n
The rebuilding of houses could be done by the city
\nadministration creating very needed jobs and obliterating the
\ntraumatic sights.<\/p>\n
It is true that the trauma will not be that easy to overcome
\nbut nevertheless the effort would heal a lot of wounds.<\/p>\n
Let us remember that most victims of the riots are Indonesians
\nas well.<\/p>\n
Everyone makes mistakes but we have to pay for our mistakes.
\nIt takes courage to admit one's wrongs, but it takes more courage
\nto rectify those wrongs.<\/p>\n
It is better to pay here on Earth for our wrongs than in the
\nhereafter.<\/p>\n
We have to be strong and admit that what happened was wrong.
\nIt was wrong according to our religions, morals and law and our
\nPancasila philosophy.<\/p>\n
May God Almighty guide us and save our ship in this stormy
\nsea.<\/p>\n
Or could the end of time be near?<\/p>\n
