        "content": "<p>&apos;Don&apos;t prolong grief over journos&apos; death&apos;<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Vice-Governor of the National Resilience<br>\nInstitute Juwono Sudarsono said yesterday that it would be best<br>\nto leave the issue of the tragic death of six foreign journalists<br>\nin the past.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We understand the extent of the bereavement that has been<br>\ngoing on for the past years but it would only prolong the grief<br>\nif this were played up again,&quot; he told The Jakarta Post<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It is so distant in the past and (the evidence) so murky it<br>\nis best to stop,&quot; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Canberra last week issued the findings of a commission headed<br>\nby Tom Sherman which alleged that six journalists, including an<br>\nAustralian, covering the civil war in East Timor in 1975 were<br>\nkilled by Indonesian troops.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has maintained that they were caught in the cross<br>\nfire between two opposing East Timorese forces.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas on Tuesday<br>\nsaid he was studying the report but had so far found no new<br>\nevidence which would prompt a change in Jakarta&apos;s position.<\/p>\n<p>Alatas added that while Canberra has not demanded a reply,<br>\nthere is a possibility that Jakarta might issue a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The report has risen to become yet another potentially thorny<br>\nissue in the rocky relations between Indonesia and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>According to Juwono, the commission was formed last year to<br>\naccommodate the public outcry commemorating the 20th anniversary<br>\nof the journalists&apos; death.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It is part of Australia&apos;s domestic politics which the Keating<br>\ngovernment could not avoid,&quot; Juwono said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that it was still acceptable as long as the<br>\ncommission&apos;s report accommodates the demands within Australia&apos;s<br>\ndomestic politics.<\/p>\n<p>However, if the issue is pushed further &quot;it would only prolong<br>\nthe grief of the families,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It is best to terminate the debate.&quot; (mds)<\/p>",
