'Don't intervere with BPS operations'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono warned
\ngovernment institutions here yesterday not to interfere with the
\nindependence of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) in fixing
\nits data.<\/p>\n
\"No parties are allowed to influence the data recorded by the
\nstatistic bureau, which guarantees the objectivity and
\ncredibility of its works,\" Moerdiono said in his address at the
\nopening of BPS's national congress.<\/p>\n
Moerdino's remarks came amid concerns over the credibility of
\nBPS and its economic data, especially figures related to
\ninflation rates.<\/p>\n
The inflation rate dropped to 9.24 percent in 1994 from 9.77
\npercent in 1993, but critics said that the figures for those two
\nyears were tailored to meet the government's commitment to keep
\nthe inflation rate under 10 percent.<\/p>\n
Moerdiono said in his address yesterday that misleading data
\ncould jeopardize the government's development strategies, many of
\nwhich are formulated with BPS data.<\/p>\n
BPS, which is overseen by the State Secretariat, should be
\nable to provide reliable and accurate data for the public, he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
\"BPS data should reflect the facts and false data could create
\nwrong interpretations,\" he said, adding that manipulated data
\ncould be fatal to the country's economic and social development.<\/p>\n
The BPS chairman, Soegianto, acknowledged that the agency
\nstill faces difficulties in maintaining the fairness of its data,
\npartly due to the lack of coordination with other government
\ninstitutions.<\/p>\n
Soegianto also acknowledged that a number of government
\noffices still do not really respect the position of his agency as
\nthe official data collector.<\/p>\n
\"It is, therefore, necessary to restate the position of the
\nagency as an independent data collector,\" he said, adding that
\nthe issuance of statistical data by other government institutions
