Indonesian Muslims are reminded to observe the sunnah fasts of Tasu'a and Ashura in Muharram 1448 H, which carry the virtue of expiating sins from the previous year. The government and Muhammadiyah have aligned their calendars, setting the fasts on 24 and 25 June 2026, while Nahdlatul Ulama's rukyatul hilal method places them a day later on 25 and 26 June 2026. The public is encouraged to follow their respective convictions without dispute.

Muslims are reminded not to miss the sunnah fasts of Tasu’a and
Ashura in the month of Muharram 1448 Hijri. The fasts, observed on the
9th and 10th of Muharram, hold great virtue, with the Prophet Muhammad
(peace be upon him) stating that the Ashura fast can expiate the sins of
the previous year. Muharram itself is one of the sacred months in Islam
and part of the four forbidden months (asyhurul hurum), during which
Muslims are encouraged to increase their acts of worship, including
fasting. According to the government’s determination through the
Ministry of Religious Affairs, 1 Muharram 1448 H falls on Tuesday, 16
June 2026. Consequently, the Tasu’a fast (9 Muharram) will be observed
on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, and the Ashura fast (10 Muharram) on
Thursday, 25 June 2026. This government decision aligns with the Global
Hijri Calendar (KHGT) guidelines compiled by the Tarjih and Tajdid
Council of Muhammadiyah. Meanwhile, the Falakiyah Institute of the
Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (LF PBNU) has set 1 Muharram 1448 H on
Wednesday, 17 June 2026, based on rukyatul hilal (moon sighting). Under
this determination, the Tasu’a fast falls on Thursday, 25 June 2026, and
the Ashura fast on Friday, 26 June 2026. The difference arises from the
varying methods used to determine the start of Muharram. The public is
advised to follow the decision they believe in and to avoid debating the
differences.
",
