Don't bring relatives: Sutiyoso<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Sutiyoso urged all Jakartans spending
\nthe week-long festive holidays at home not to bring relatives or
\nfriends back with them to the capital.<\/p>\n
The arrival of new migrants here will only be a burden to the
\ncity, he said during a visit to several major traditional
\nmarkets, bus terminals, train stations and the Tanjung Priok
\nseaport.<\/p>\n
The governor said people no longer needed to seek jobs in the
\ncapital since their homes would have better job opportunities in
\nline with the implementation of regional autonomy slated for next
\nmonth.<\/p>\n
\"Regional autonomy will offer great chances for development in
\nevery province.<\/p>\n
\"So why should anyone come to the capital if their region can
\noffer more comfortable jobs?\" said Sutiyoso, who was accompanied
\nby other top city officials, including Jakarta Police chief Insp.
\nGen. Mulyono Sulaiman.<\/p>\n
The capital at this time, the governor said, was an
\ninconvenient place to live in for the jobless and inexperienced
\nmigrants since it offered few jobs or relatively affordable
\nhousing.<\/p>\n
\"Jakarta is not a nice place to live in. There are no places
\nto stay or jobs to do here.\"<\/p>\n
The City Public Order officer will arrest you if you are
\nhomeless, so don't come here,\" Sutiyoso told the holidaymakers,
\nwho were mostly government employees and casual workers.<\/p>\n
He repeated his remarks in the same tone during dialogs with
\ntravelers at other train stations and bus terminals.<\/p>\n
During the visit, the governor also checked the price of
\nseveral basic needs in which he learned some of the prices for
\nthe commodities, such as eggs and beef, had gone up over the past
\nfew days due to transportation problems resulting from the recent
\nnatural disasters in Java and Sumatra.<\/p>\n
\"The price increases result more from the significant hike in
\nthe transportation fare, not because of inadequate stock,\"
