Doing business with China<\/p>\n
The chairman of China's National People's Congress, Li Peng,
\nrecently visited Indonesia, opening up opportunities for
\nincreased bilateral economic ties that both sides must properly
\nand quickly seize.<\/p>\n
In the New Order era, ethnic Chinese businesspeople were
\nintentionally placed between the ruler and the people. During
\nthis period, Indonesia's economy grew impressively but was
\ntainted by rampant corruption, collusion and nepotism. In this
\ncontext, ethnic Chinese businesspeople have often been accused of
\nholding a share of the blame for the collapse of Indonesia's
\neconomy.<\/p>\n
Actually, these ethnic Chinese businesspeople are not entirely
\nto blame, because business is business and business goals will be
\nreached by hook or by crook.<\/p>\n
Thankfully, Indonesia's present political and economic
\nsituation has done away with much of this adverse stigma. Like it
\nor not, Indonesia must make use of China's rapid economic
\ndevelopment. An overly dominant Chinese economy will cause a
\ncrisis in Asia.<\/p>\n
Businesses run by ethnic Chinese will be the backbone of
\nSoutheast Asia's business development and prosperity. If these
\nbusinesses enjoy enough freedom and prosper, the countries where
\nthey operate -- Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, for example --
\nwill be economically sound and stable.<\/p>\n
In Indonesia, ethnic Chinese businesspeople often enjoy
\nfreedom, but sometimes they are intimidated. That's why the
\ncountry's economy is swinging back and forth.<\/p>\n
Ethnic Chinese businesspeople are assets to the country and
\nmust be cashed in on in facing global competition, particularly
\nin dealing with businesspeople from China.<\/p>\n
