        "content": "<p>Dogs' names baffle Bali elders<\/p>\n<p>DENPASAR, Bali: Local elders here have often lamented the fact<br>\nthat the younger generation were being lured away by<br>\nwesternization.<\/p>\n<p>Their complaints may have been well-founded on Sunday when<br>\nalmost all the canines participating in the Kintamani dog contest<br>\nwere given western names by their Indonesian owners.<\/p>\n<p>I Ketut Badeng, 70, a community elder, stared in amazement as<br>\nonly one dog out of a parade of 43 was said to have a<br>\n\"traditional\" name.<\/p>\n<p>Once common pet names like Semprong, Belang or Ketek were<br>\nnowhere to be heard. Instead, they have been replaced by the<br>\nlikes of Welly, Donny, Clasy and Almont.<\/p>\n<p>\"There's practically only one dog using a local name, Sempol.<br>\nAll the rest have western names,\" Badeng told Antara on the<br>\nsidelines of the contest held by the Udayana University<br>\nVeterinary Faculty and Prima tabloid.<\/p>\n<p>The contest was opened by Governor Dewa Beratha and Denpasar<br>\nMayor AA Purpayoga.(mds)<\/p>",
