Does size matter to men -- and women?<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): It is not a subject for polite conversation,
\nbeing too delicate an issue to be talked about openly except with
\na heavy dose of showy ribbing.<\/p>\n
The last taboo? Perhaps not, but the issue of penis size --
\nand how they measure up to their peers -- is a deeply personal
\none for many men.<\/p>\n
Complicating the equation is the notoriously sensitive male
\nego, with most men loathe to admit their fear of being belittled.<\/p>\n
\"Of course men think about it,\" said Greg, a 27-year-old
\nAmerican. \"It's not something they talk about but it is something
\nthey care about. I think most men are interested to know if they
\nare average or a little above.\"<\/p>\n
Even the most down-to-earth among us take some prurient
\ninterest in what the famous look like without their clothes on.
\nNotorious tales, many no doubt apocryphal, abound of well-endowed
\nfigures and those less fortunate.<\/p>\n
Comedian Milton Berle was famed for his sexual endowment in
\nHollywood in the 1950s, but one of the husbands of actress Jean
\nHarlow reportedly killed himself 20 years earlier because of his
\ndeficiencies.<\/p>\n
The widespread availability of pornography, with
\nextraordinarily well-endowed stars such as John Holmes earning
\nicon status, has further blurred the definition of \"normal\"
\npenile length. Sex researchers Masters and Johnson in their
\ncopious studies on male sexuality put the average for American
\nmales at about six inches (15 centimeters).<\/p>\n
Men who feel they come up short, including in Indonesia, will
\ngo to almost any lengths to increase their penis size.<\/p>\n
An array of herbal potions, creams and gadgets hold out hope,
\nbeckoning from the \"Medical Treatment\" classifieds in the
\ncountry's largest tabloid daily, Pos Kota. One treatment -- a
\ncombination of massage with special oils -- seems to have
\nperformed such wonders that it has led to a host of copycat
\nimitators using the same name.<\/p>\n
Others bank on more modern methods.<\/p>\n
From all walks of life, in ties or dungarees, a diverse
\nassortment of men files through the doors of a small office
\ntucked away on a small street in Chinatown. Their shared goal is
\nnot so much a desire to stand shoulder to shoulder with their
\nfellow man, but more to meet their own conviction that size,
\nregardless of the soothing words of others, does matter.<\/p>\n
When they emerge an hour later, it is with more than their
\npride pumped up.<\/p>\n
The process is almost communist in its utilitarian efficiency,
\nas inhibitions and shame are left at the door. Customers are
\nushered in to one of a long row of small cubicles, furnished
\nsparsely with a chair, side table and clothes hook. Pants are
\npulled down before a worker liberally applies Vaseline to cushion
\nthe application of the suction pump, which proceeds to tug and
\npull for the next hour.<\/p>\n
Does it make a difference?<\/p>\n
Regular customers swear by the treatment, which they say
\nappears to cause at least a superficial lengthening of the penis.
\nBut they admit a side effect is that it leaves the penis looking
\nlike it has been put through the wringer.<\/p>\n
If regular pump treatments do not do the trick, customers with
\nthe cash can consider the more radical step of penile implants.<\/p>\n
But the lowdown on penis size perhaps does not lie with the
\nbruised ego of a man who remembers coming up short in the junior
\nhigh school locker room or who has grown up surrounded by
\ndaunting examples of \"real men\" from Western pornography.<\/p>\n
The real verdict lies with women.<\/p>\n
The traditional view is that most women are more caught up in
\nthe emotional and sensual aspects of lovemaking, with physical
\nendowment considered a secondary concern.<\/p>\n
But one woman vouched that a partner's endowment did matter.<\/p>\n
\"It was something important to me when I was younger and first
\ngoing out with men,\" said Lauren, 30. \"I was interested in being
\nsatisfied, so I cared about how big my partner was. Now, other
\nthings, such as affection, are perhaps more important to me, but
\nthat comes with getting older and wiser about relationships.\"<\/p>\n
Another woman said physical attributes were only part of the
\npackage.<\/p>\n
\"It may be important to some women, but I think it is more
\nimportant that a man is caring and loving,\" said Vera. \"I mean,
\nthere is only so much you can do with a penis. How a man treats
\nyou is more the issue.\"<\/p>\n
A man willing to admit that he was a pauper, not a king, when
\nit came to physical endowment said it was never a major concern
\nfor him.<\/p>\n
\"Obviously, I would like to be bigger, but I would also like
\nto have a better job and a better salary,\" Josh said.<\/p>\n
\"I never really thought about the fact that it was average
\nuntil one day I saw my younger brother coming out of the bathroom
\nand realized he was considerably bigger than me.\"<\/p>\n
He said he rarely thinks about the subject, although he admits
\nto being shy about baring his body even to his partner.<\/p>\n
\"I wouldn't say that has much to do with the penis size thing,
\nbut more about who I am anyway. I mean, if somebody doesn't like
\nme for that reason, well, it's alright then, I'll find someone
