As a person of Chinese descend I was completely startled by the
\nJakarta Metropolitan Administration's (DKI) policy concerning
\ndocumentation needed for citizens of Chinese descend. To move from
\nCentral Jakarta to North Jakarta, for example, I have to change
\nour K-I paper (document required for Jakarta residents of Chinese
\ndescend) besides the other papers necessary for relocation to a
\nnew area. The K-I paper is only required in DKI as a control
\ndevice over citizens of Chinese descend.<\/p>\n
Why is this harsh rule imposed on us, as if we were dangerous
\npeople threatening the security of Jakarta? Our families have
\nbeen living in Indonesia for five generations. I have
\nparticipated in two general elections. We speak Bahasa Indonesia.
\nWe have Indonesian education including Pancasila Morality,
\nIndonesian History, and other subjects related to Indonesian
\npatriotism. Even my wife is a native Indonesian. In short, I feel
\nI'm made in Indonesia, body and soul. Why should I be put under
\nsuch strict control?<\/p>\n
Other certificates such as my identity card, marriage
\ncertificate etc. should be enough to prove that I have all the
\nlegal documents required. Therefore, I suggest that the K-I form
\nbe excluded from the documents needed for administrative purposes
\nwithin the jurisdiction of Jakarta. This will surely help the
\ngovernment's program of assimilating citizens of Chinese descend
\nand native Indonesians.<\/p>\n
