Doctor's tips for parents with asthmatic children<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A doctor told parents of asthmatic children here
\nSaturday that they could treat their children themselves with the
\naid of a newly produced asthma information and treatment kit.<\/p>\n
F.X. Marseno told a seminar on Convenient Living for
\nAsthmatic Patients that parents should consult with doctors to
\nlearn more about the uncurable disease, and increase their skills
\nand confidence in caring for their children at home.<\/p>\n
Asthma is a chronic chest complaint that makes it difficult
\nfor sufferers to breath in some conditions. The kits include an
\ninhaler, a device to test the severity of the condition and
\ninformation on managing asthma.<\/p>\n
The one-day seminar at Graha Medika Hospital, which looked at
\nasthma in children and adults, was attended by about 200
\nparticipants.<\/p>\n
\"Just think your of doctors as consultants only and you can be
\n'doctors', free of charge, for your asthmatic children,\" Marseno
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He said parents should not panic when their children suffered
\na relapse at midnight, because everything they needed was in the
\nkits.<\/p>\n
\"Asthma is incurable but the grief can be reduced and even
\neliminated with the most up-to-date equipment and better control
\nof triggering factors, such as influenza, heavy exercise,
\nrespiratory viruses, allergens, smoke and cold.<\/p>\n
He said corticosteroid was the latest asthma medicine for
\neliminating inflammation.<\/p>\n
Others such as beta-2 agonist, theophylin and anti-cholinergic
\nonly prevent a relapse.<\/p>\n
A variety of inhalers were introduced at the seminar. Their
\naction and use was explained in detail.<\/p>\n
Parents were told of one of the latest types of inhaler, which
\ncould be given to infants even when they were crying.<\/p>\n
\"Parents are the best people to treat their asthmatic
\nchildren. Don't trust anybody, including your maids, to give your
\nchildren medicines,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Pradjnaparamita, another speaker, said parents should take
\nasthmatic children to a hospital or clinic for a check up once
\nevery three months. But if the condition deteriorates they
\nshould have their child checked more often.<\/p>\n
Participants appeared enthusiastic about the question and
\nanswer session, and used the opportunity to get as much
