Doctors end strike in Lampung<\/p>\n
BANDARLAMPUNG: Around 300 part-time, non-contract doctors in
\nLampung ended their week-long strike on Tuesday after Minister of
\nHealth Achmad Suyudi promised them better pay and a clearer
\nemployment status.<\/p>\n
\"Around 80 percent of the doctors' demands have been responded
\nto, in particular the problem with their status as temporary
\ncivil servants,\" Basuki, chairman of the protesting group, the
\nForum for General Doctors and Dentists in Lampung, said.<\/p>\n
Achmad met more than 100 doctors, including representatives
\nfrom Lampung, who demonstrated at his office in Jakarta on
\nMonday. He pledged to address their grievances then and came
\nthrough on his promise on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Basuki said the health minister had written to the manpower
\nministry to modify the \"unclear\" status for the non-contract
\ndoctors assigned to community health centers in villages across
\nthe country.<\/p>\n
Under the prevailing law, recent medical school graduates are
\nrequired to work in remote villages for two to five years before
\nthey can become eligible for their medical licenses.<\/p>\n
Basuki said the problem of the issuance of licenses would be
