        "content": "<p>Doctors demand protection<\/p>\n<p>DILI, East Timor: The East Timor branch of the Indonesian<br>\nDoctors Association (IDI) has called on the provincial government<br>\nand security authorities to guarantee the safety of doctors<br>\nposted across the province.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We have been forced to call for help because doctors<br>\nstationed in the province can no longer stand the kind of abuse<br>\nthey frequently receive. They are often assaulted, terrorized and<br>\nintimidated by local residents,&quot; I Wayan Winarta, the<br>\nassociation&apos;s branch chief here, said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>One hundred and twenty doctors are stationed in the province,<br>\nmost of whom are not native to the area.<\/p>\n<p>Antara reported that in a petition filed with East Timor<br>\nGovernor Abilio Jose Osorio Soares, the association urged the<br>\nMinister of Health to review the policy of sending recent<br>\ngraduates and other inexperienced medical staff to the province<br>\nif their security could not be guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Soares acknowledged that doctors were frequently<br>\nsubjected to abuse and offered them an apology.<\/p>\n<p>He urged security authorities and regents to pay more<br>\nattention to the issue and promised to discuss the matter with<br>\nlocal religious and community leaders.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I apologize to doctors for the way they have been treated,<br>\n(but) we should be patient because unfortunately teachers and<br>\nother government employees also often receive the same kind of<br>\ntreatment,&quot; he remarked apologetically.<\/p>",
