Doctors demand protection<\/p>\n
DILI, East Timor: The East Timor branch of the Indonesian
\nDoctors Association (IDI) has called on the provincial government
\nand security authorities to guarantee the safety of doctors
\nposted across the province.<\/p>\n
"We have been forced to call for help because doctors
\nstationed in the province can no longer stand the kind of abuse
\nthey frequently receive. They are often assaulted, terrorized and
\nintimidated by local residents," I Wayan Winarta, the
\nassociation's branch chief here, said yesterday.<\/p>\n
One hundred and twenty doctors are stationed in the province,
\nmost of whom are not native to the area.<\/p>\n
Antara reported that in a petition filed with East Timor
\nGovernor Abilio Jose Osorio Soares, the association urged the
\nMinister of Health to review the policy of sending recent
\ngraduates and other inexperienced medical staff to the province
\nif their security could not be guaranteed.<\/p>\n
Governor Soares acknowledged that doctors were frequently
\nsubjected to abuse and offered them an apology.<\/p>\n
He urged security authorities and regents to pay more
\nattention to the issue and promised to discuss the matter with
\nlocal religious and community leaders.<\/p>\n
"I apologize to doctors for the way they have been treated,
\n(but) we should be patient because unfortunately teachers and
\nother government employees also often receive the same kind of
\ntreatment," he remarked apologetically.<\/p>",
