The widespread sale of cosmetics on online marketplaces has prompted\ncalls for increased public vigilance when purchasing beauty products.\nAmidst a surge in cheap products promising instant results, a lecturer\nfrom the Faculty of Pharmacy at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta\n(UMY) has warned that dangerous cosmetics are still frequently found\ncirculating online.<\/p>\n
This warning follows the discovery by the Indonesian Food and Drug\nAuthority (BPOM) of 11 cosmetic products containing the red dye K10,\nalso known as Rhodamin B, throughout 2026. These findings span various\nproducts, including face creams, toners, nail polish, and shampoos. In\naddition to Rhodamin B, BPOM also identified other hazardous substances\nsuch as mercury, hydroquinone, retinoic acid, dexamethasone, and\n1,4-dioxane contamination, all of which pose significant health\nrisks.<\/p>\n

Sabtanti Harimurti, M.Sc., Ph.D., a lecturer in the Pharmacy\nStudy Programme at UMY\u2019s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, stated\nthat the public must be more critical before purchasing cosmetics,\nparticularly those sold freely on marketplaces at extremely low prices.\n\u201cCosmetics are now very easy to find on marketplaces. Therefore, the\npublic must be more thorough before buying. Cosmetics containing dangerous dyes typically feature excessively\nbright colours and appear highly glossy when exposed to light.\nFurthermore, the texture may sometimes be poorly mixed, resulting in\nvisible colour clumps within the product. She explained that Rhodamin B\nis actually a synthetic dye used for the textile, paint, and paper\nindustries, and is not intended for human use. However, due to its\nbright colour and low cost, the substance is frequently misused in\ndecorative cosmetics such as lipsticks, blushes, and eyeshadows.\n\u201cBecause the colour is bright and the price is cheap, some parties\nmisuse it in cosmetics to make them look attractive while keeping\nproduction costs low,\u201d said Sabtanti.<\/p>\n
