DJs told to use Indonesian<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Radio disc jockeys are having to tune it down
\nnow that they too have been barred from using foreign languages
\non their programs.<\/p>\n
The association of private radio stations (PRSSNI) has ordered
\nall its members to join in the government's campaign to use \"good
\nand correct Bahasa Indonesia\", Antara reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\"Using a foreign language for communication is prohibited by
\nthe law,\" PRSSNI Chairman Poernomo said.<\/p>\n
The government's campaign, launched on May 20, gave all the
\nmore reason for radio disc jockeys not to use foreign languages
\nsuch as English, he said.<\/p>\n
Poernomo admitted that many radio stations, especially in
\nJakarta, frequently use English in their programs, \"but usually
\nthey don't use it for an entire show...Maybe it's a way to
\nattract foreign listeners\".<\/p>\n
PRSSNI has also ordered its members to avoid using slang
\nbahasa, which he said is often used not to degrade bahasa but for
\nthe sake of easy listening.<\/p>\n
\"If they use good and correct bahasa, they will sound too
\nformal like RRI,\" he said, citing Radio Republik Indonesia, the
\nstate-owned radio station.<\/p>\n
He said PRSSNI has distributed circulars to members informing
\nthem of the policies but emphasized that the organization had no
