Djajanti Group forms scholarship fund<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The widely-diversified Djajanti Group announced
\nyesterday the establishment of a Rp 1 billion (US$450,000) trust
\nfund to finance 160 scholarships for school children and students
\nin Maluku and Irian Jaya every year.<\/p>\n
\"We set up this fund as a token of our gratitude on the
\noccasion of the golden anniversary of our independence,\"
\nDjajanti's Chairman Burhan Uray said at the launching of the
\nrevolving fund yesterday evening.<\/p>\n
Burhan added that the trust fund also reflected his group's
\nstrong commitment to the development of Indonesia's eastern
\nregion through the development of human resources.<\/p>\n
He said the income from the fund would initially support 160
\nscholarships for primary, secondary school, high school and
\nuniversity students a year.<\/p>\n
\"But the number is expected to increase as the fund grows
\nsteadily,\" Burhan said, adding that the scholarships would be
\ngranted to highly talented students from poor families.<\/p>\n
The Djajanti Group is one of the country's largest forest-
\nbased companies and manufactures a wide range of wood products.
\nThe group has also diversified into fishing, sago processing,
\ntree-crop plantations, fishing-boat building and cement.<\/p>\n
\"Most of our business activities are based in the eastern
\nregion, notably Maluku and Irian Jaya. We want to contribute more
\nto the development of human resources in that region,\" Burhan
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The students granted scholarships will be selected by two
\nprovincial teams in Maluku and Irian Jaya in cooperation with
\nteam at the Djajanti head office in Jakarta, he explained.<\/p>\n
Burhan hoped that other business groups would contribute to
\nthe trust fund or set up their own scholarship programs to
\naccelerate the development of human resources. (vin)<\/p>",
