REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA \u2013 The Centre for Standards and Services\nfor Craft and Batik Industries (BBSPJIKB) is collaborating with the\nYogyakarta Special Region Tourism Office to organise training and\nprofessional certification in the creative economy (ekraf) sector,\nspecifically in the craft subsector focusing on the batik wax-making\nscheme. This programme targets facilitating certification for 175 ekraf\nactors in DIY through 2026.<\/p>\n
Head of the Creative Economy Development Division at the DIY Tourism\nOffice, Iwan Pramana, stated that the first batch of training was held\nfrom 13\u201317 April 2026, involving 20 batik artisans who passed the\nselection process. Participants come from various regions in DIY and are\nrequired to have experience in the batik field.<\/p>\n
According to him, this programme is an effort to enhance the capacity\nof ekraf actors not only in terms of skills but also through competency\nrecognition via certification.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo this is a form of support for improving the capacity of creative\neconomy actors, especially in Batik Crafts. In addition to enhancing\ntheir competencies, we will also carry out certification. Then, how to\nincrease the product value, as mentioned, this is also part of product\nimprovement,\u201d he said when met on the sidelines of the training event on\nMonday (13\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n
Iwan explained that the training also aims to promote the\nsustainability of the batik industry in DIY, including waste management\nand production efficiency. He did not deny that batik production costs\nare still dominated by wax usage. Therefore, innovation in managing this\nmaterial is key to increasing artisans\u2019 incomes.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlmost 70 percent of batik production costs are for wax, so we are\n(looking for ways) to reduce it. Now, when costs are reduced, their\nincomes automatically increase further,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In addition to improving efficiency, the training also addresses the\nneed for competency recognition for artisans who have not yet been\nformally certified. Gradually, training and certification facilitation\nwill be provided to other creative economy actors in the developing DIY\nregion, as well as empowering local communities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are 17 subsectors in the creative economy, so there are many,\nfrom design, culinary, crafts, fashion, then games, animation,\ntelevision, radio, advertising, so we take those that really have many\npractitioners in DIY,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to him, certification for creative economy actors is very\nimportant, especially for artisans who have worked in the craft sector\nfor years but have not received recognition for their expertise in\ncreating products.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have been working in batik all this time, but have not received\nrecognition for their skills. So today, besides providing training\nagain, we are giving competencies. (This is beneficial) when they are\nlater asked to be instructors, they already have national certification\nrecognition. Because this is not just competency-based training, but\nthere will also be BNSP certification,\u201d he revealed.<\/p>\n
For this year, the DIY Tourism Office targets certification for 175\nekraf actors, divided into six to eight batches. He reiterated that\ncertification is important as official recognition of artisans\u2019 skills,\nwhile also opening opportunities for them to become instructors in the\nfuture.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Member of Commission B of the DIY DPRD, Rifki Listianto,\nemphasised legislative support for the development of MSMEs, including\nthe creative economy sector. With this programme, the government hopes\nthat batik actors in DIY will become more competent, efficient in\nproduction, and able to present innovative, environmentally friendly\nproducts with high economic value.<\/p>\n
