Dissolving BPKP, saving money<\/p>\n
Delivering his speech at the People's Consultative Assembly
\n(MPR) Annual Session, the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) chief Satrio
\nB. Joedono proposed that the MPR dissolve the Development and
\nFinancial Control Board (BPKP) and merge it into BPK for reasons
\nof cost efficiency and avoidance of audit duplication.<\/p>\n
As our country is now sustaining a huge debt, the MPR should
\nimmediately take up this suggestion and follow it up by deciding
\nto dissolve the BPKP. The proposal is reasonable and objective,
\nwithout any political motive. There is no reason why the MPR
\nshould not accept it.<\/p>\n
In fact, besides the BPKP, the Supreme Advisory Council (DPA)
\nand some other ministries, whose contribution to the country to
\npromote the country's economy is doubtful, such as the State
\nMinistry for Women's Empowerment, the State Ministry for
\nAdministrative Reforms and the Ministry for Religious Affairs,
\nshould be dissolved.<\/p>\n
Others, such as the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of
\nForestry and the Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries
\ncould be consolidated to become one, while the State Ministry for
\nEastern Indonesian Development could be made part of the National
\nDevelopment Planning Agency. Next, the State Ministry for Tourism
\nand Culture should be merged with the Transportation Ministry,
\netc.<\/p>\n
Other ministries, whose survival needs to be reviewed too,
\nshould streamline some of the organizations under their
\nsupervision, like institutions, agencies, ad hoc teams,
\ncommissions and other non-ministerial bodies that have taken much
\nof the state budget.<\/p>\n
Singapore, a rich country in southeast Asia, has become
\nworried about its economic situation and has immediately taken
\nvarious measures to protect its economy in order to prepare
\nitself for the impact of the Sept.11 attacks on the twin towers
\nof the World Trade Center, a phenomenon likely to plunge the
\nworld economy into a severe recession.<\/p>\n
