Dissension in PPP congress<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: The provincial branch of the Moslem-
\nbased United Development Party (PPP) is facing a rift as a number
\nof activists try to hold two different congresses.<\/p>\n
The first group, led by Ali Jabar Napitupulu, announced
\nrecently it would set up a committee and hold a congress to elect
\nnew leadership. The second group, led by Bachtiar Chamsyah,
\nfollowed suit yesterday, announcing its plan to also hold a
\ncongress.<\/p>\n
Bachtiar's group asserted that its plan was in accordance with
\nthe party's statute, and said that the first group of activists
\nwas acting out of line.<\/p>\n
Bachtiar's spokesman, Najamuddin Nasution, said Napitulu was a
\ndisgruntled activist who could not accept Bachtiar's appointment
\nas acting chairman of the provincial branch, following the death
\nof its chairman, Syufri Helmi Tanjung.<\/p>\n
Similar disputes have been occurring in some branches of the
