The \u2018Between Two Gates\u2019 (BTG) heritage area in Kotagede, Yogyakarta,\nwas forced to close temporarily due to the actions of visiting tourists.\nThe site\u2019s management reported that the closure lasted for two days\nfollowing recent incidents.<\/p>\n
Joko Nugroho, the manager of BTG, explained that the closure began on\nthe morning of Sunday (31\/5). At approximately 07:00 AM, two buses\ncarrying a large group of foreign tourists arrived without prior notice.\nThe sudden arrival of dozens of visitors caused significant discomfort\nfor the local residents.<\/p>\n
\u2018There was a group of foreign tourists, reportedly from Asia,\narriving in two buses. Because it was so early and there were so many\npeople, it became very crowded and noisy,\u2019 Joko explained on Wednesday\n(3\/6).<\/p>\n
\u2018Ultimately, a resident questioned why there was no prior\nnotification. Because the number of visitors was too high, we decided to\nstop entries to prevent further disturbance to the neighbourhood,\u2019 he\nadded.<\/p>\n
Located south of the Kotagede Market in the Purbayan Village, Between\nTwo Gates consists of the backyards of residential houses that form a\nnarrow alleyway. While these alleys have become popular photography\nspots due to social media, the area remains private property.<\/p>\n
\u2018Technically, this is not a public area; it is the backyard of\nresidents\u2019 homes. There has been an agreement since my grandfather\u2019s\ntime to allow this as a thoroughfare,\u2019 Joko stated.<\/p>\n
Joko noted that the recent incident was the breaking point for\nresidents\u2019 frustrations. The issue is not with tourists using\nprofessional tour guides or agencies, but with independent travellers\nwho arrive based solely on social media trends without following local\netiquette.<\/p>\n
\u2018The incident on Sunday was the peak of accumulated anger. While we\nhave installed information boards urging visitors to maintain proper\nbehaviour and reminding them that this is a private area, many\nindependent visitors ignore these rules,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
Although the site has since reopened, the community is scheduled to\nhold a meeting to determine future measures.
