Displaced residents affected by the earthquake in Kampung Tengku\nLeda, Lamba Leda District, East Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), set\nfire to several emergency tents provided by the National Disaster\nMitigation Agency (BNPB) on Monday (24\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n
The action was taken because residents were disappointed that they\nwere not met by one of the regional heads who sent aid to the area. The\nregional head only met with displaced residents in Kampung Lamba Keli,\nwhich is about one kilometre from Kampung Tengku Leda. He came to East\nManggarai to see the impact of the earthquake and distribute aid to\naffected communities.<\/p>\n
Video of residents burning the tents went viral on social media. In\nthe video seen by detikBali, the tents were burned in the middle of a\nfield. Hundreds of people could be seen around the burning tents.<\/p>\n
\u201cBurn it,\u201d shouted a resident.<\/p>\n
In another video, a number of residents vented their anger at the\nLamba Leda District government and security forces.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are disappointed at being pushed around,\u201d said a man in the\nvideo.<\/p>\n
Another man said they had been waiting since morning to meet the\nregional head.<\/p>\n
\u201cPity our wives, our babies. We have been waiting here since morning.\nWhat do we get? Is this how it is, sir? Don\u2019t make things difficult for\nus,\u201d the man demanded.<\/p>\n
Lamba Leda District Head Vitalis Edmundus Buru Lana confirmed the\nincident. Vitalis said two BNPB aid tents were burned by residents. He\ndeeply regretted that the incident occurred.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I know is that the tents were burned. The tents from the\ndistrict, the family tents from BNPB. That is what we regret,\u201d said\nVitalis.<\/p>\n
He confirmed that the burning was triggered by residents\u2019\ndisappointment at not being met. Vitalis explained that the regional\nhead had previously planned to meet earthquake-affected residents in\nKampung Lamba Keli and Tengku Leda with a one-hour time allocation.\nAffected residents in each village were planned to be met for 30 minutes\neach.<\/p>\n
However, conditions on the ground did not match the plan. The\none-hour visit time was used up in Kampung Lamba Keli. He then continued\nhis visit agenda to other places, such as reviewing the community health\ncentre and others.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe spent too long in Lamba Keli earlier, a lot of time was cut in\nLamba Keli, so there was no time to stop by Tengku Leda. So that was an\nexpression of disappointment from the residents, they did not meet with\nhim, that was an expression of disappointment,\u201d Vitalis explained.<\/p>\n
Vitalis and security forces then met with Tengku Leda residents. He\nsaid he explained what had happened. According to him, the situation\nthere is now conducive.<\/p>\n
