Discussion on manpower bill delayed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government has decided to postpone
\nparliamentary debate over the controversial manpower bill, which
\nhas been widely criticized for allegedly curtailing workers'
\nrights. Insufficient time has been cited as an excuse.<\/p>\n
Minister of Manpower Abdul Latief has requested that the House
\nof Representatives' Commission VI in charge of manpower and
\nindustry postpone the discussion because he believed that "now
\nwas not the right time," an official here said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Sutikno said the minister "understands that at present the
\nHouse members are too busy with the discussion of other bills."<\/p>\n
"This doesn't mean that the bill will be dropped, however,"
\nSutikno said. "Discussing the bill takes time, and we cannot
\nforce ourselves to discuss the bill in order to get immediate
\nresults."<\/p>\n
Further discussion may be postponed until after the May 29
\ngeneral elections.<\/p>\n
Commission chairman Erie Sukardja said on Wednesday the
\nminister's request did not necessarily mean that the House would
\ncease studying the bill.<\/p>\n
The bill provoked strong reactions from workers and various
\nlegal and labor organizations. They have argued that the bill has
\nstriven to curtail the workers right to strike. (12)<\/p>",
