Discrimination in workplace must be ended<\/p>\n
SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: Dozens of disabled persons in East
\nKalimantan staged a protest on Tuesday, demanding the government
\nto end discrimination against them in the work place.<\/p>\n
During the protest, which coincided with the Disabled Persons
\nInternational Day, they also demanded the local government to
\nimplement central government regulations to punish the companies
\nthat barred them from entering private and government-owned
\nfirms.<\/p>\n
In the protest, held in front of East Kalimantan's Social
\nAffairs agency office, the protesters lashed out at the local
\ngovernment for failing to implement regulations, which
\nspecifically ruled that the companies must not discriminate
\nagainst disabled persons. They also demanded a specific bylaw,
\nwherein the local government would have to ensure employment for
\ndisabled persons.<\/p>\n
They said that they "are given attention by the government,
\nonly when there is a social project in the Social Office."<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Syafrudin, the deputy chairman of East Kalimantan
\nSocial Affairs agency, said that the local government could not
\nproduce a bylaw that ensured employment for disabled persons.<\/p>\n
"The issues have been adequately covered by the central
\ngovernment regulations," he said. There are approximately 1,000
\ndisabled persons in registered in East Kalimantan. -- JP<\/p>",
