Discrepancy in slum project probed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Commission D of the City Council is looking into
\nreports of irregularities in a Rp 2.6 billion (US$313,300)
\nkampong improvement project in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"We have received reports indicating several discrepancies,
\nespecially on the length of streets and sidewalks and the number
\nof houses built,\" secretary of the commission dealing with
\ndevelopmental affairs Bimo Hastoro said on Monday.<\/p>\n
The Third M.H Thamrin Project calls for the construction of
\n2,907 meters of roads, 2,289 meters of sidewalks and improvements
\non 126 houses in poor subdistricts in Papanggo, Warakas, Sungai
\nBambu, Kebon Bawang, Sunter Jaya, Lagoa and Rawa Badak.<\/p>\n
The project's status was raised in a recent two-day meeting
\nbetween the city officials and councillors in Cipayung, Bogor, to
\ndiscuss details and technical implementations of Governor
\nSutiyoso's accountability speech.<\/p>\n
Bimo said members of the council hoped to visit the sites to
\nsee the progress next week.<\/p>\n
The continuation of the kampong improvement project, which
\naims at facilitating people living in slum areas, would largely
\ndepend on resolving the discrepancies, said Bimo, who is also
\ndeputy of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI
\nPerjuangan) faction.<\/p>\n
Head of housing and settlement planning division at the City
\nHousing Agency Nusmardi said he had not heard of any report of
\nirregularities in Third M.H. Thamrin Project.<\/p>\n
\"The project had been a little slow, but we never received any
\nreport about discrepancies from the regional inspectorate
\noffice,\" Nusmardi said.<\/p>\n
The project may have encountered some difficulties,
\nparticularly in appropriating land on which to build the roads
\nand sidewalks, he said.<\/p>\n
\"But they cannot be classified as discrepancies if we can
\nexplain what happened and the conditions in the field,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the council should bring any evidence of
\nirregularities to his office in order to follow them up. (06)<\/p>",
