The Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan, asserted that as the capital\nof West Java Province, the impact of a disaster in Bandung could have\nwidespread implications. Therefore, preparedness must be built from an\nearly stage through a cultural approach.<\/p>\n
\u201cDisaster preparedness must be placed within a cultural or\nhabituation context. It should not be regarded merely as a technical\nissue, but must become a community habit,\u201d said Farhan during the\ninauguration of the Disaster Prepared Village (Kampung Siaga Bencana -\nKSB) for the Coblong District at the West Java People\u2019s Struggle\nMonument on Friday night.<\/p>\n
According to Farhan, cultivating disaster preparedness means that the\ncommunity becomes organically accustomed to safety protocols. This\nincludes an automatic understanding of evacuation points, self-rescue\nsteps, and the awareness to help one another without waiting for formal\ninstructions.<\/p>\n
The value of \u2018gotong royong\u2019, which is a character of the Indonesian\nnation, is seen as the primary foundation for the city\u2019s resilience.\nFarhan reminded the public not to fall into an individualistic mindset\nor to rely solely on the government during emergencies.<\/p>\n
\u201cProtecting Bandung City is not just the responsibility of the\ngovernment, but requires the active participation of all elements of\nsociety. Gotong royong is both a culture and a national personality,\u201d he\nadded.<\/p>\n
He also introduced the \u201cWarga Jaga Warga\u201d (Citizens Guard Citizens)\nspirit as a collective commitment to mutual protection. In emergency\nsituations, Farhan urged the community to prioritise real action in\nhelping others rather than merely documenting incidents for social\nmedia.<\/p>\n
The urgency of strengthening preparedness is based on regional\nvulnerability data. The Head of the Bandung City Social Affairs Office,\nYorisa Sativa, revealed that based on mapping, approximately 62 per cent\nof the districts in Bandung City are potentially affected by the\nactivity of the Lembang Fault.<\/p>\n
As a concrete step, the Bandung City Government continues to expand\nthe formation of Disaster Prepared Villages (KSB). To date, five KSBs\nhave been established across strategic points. The KSB is not merely a\nformal organisation, but a system equipped with supporting facilities\nfor disaster management at the grassroots level. Yorisa explained that\neach KSB possesses key components to ensure structured and sustainable\ndisaster response.<\/p>\n
