Disappointing Seminar<\/p>\n

I was particularly interested in the two-day seminar as
\nadvertised in Kompas on Dec. 2, 1994, adopting the theme
\nWelcoming Tax Reform 1995. The seminar was held by the
\nAssociation of Students of Administrative Science, School of
\nSocial Science and Politics, University of Indonesia.
\nNoted speakers were listed in the seminar's program. They were
\namong others: Mar'ie Muhammad, the Finance Minister, Fuad
\nBawazier, Director General of Tax, Aburizal Bakrie, Chairman of
\nthe Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Prof Dr
\nDorodjatun Kuncoro Yakti, a dean at University of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, the above mentioned speakers were not available
\nfor the seminar. The Finance Minister and the Director General
\nwere said to have been summoned by the House of Representatives
\nfor a hearing. Whereas Aburizal Bakrie and Dorodjatun were not
\npresent for unclear reasons.<\/p>\n
I was disappointed at the way the committee managed the
\nseminar. By listing the names of prominent figures as speakers at
\nthe seminar, the committee attracted many participants who were
\ncharged Rp 600,000 each. I was told that around 450 interested
\nparticipants were present at the seminar.<\/p>\n
The House could not have summoned the Finance Minister for a
\nhearing so suddenly. Usually, in my experience, the House gives
\nnotice of some 10 days in advance for such an event.<\/p>\n
I wish the committee had been more professional.<\/p>\n
