        "content": "<p>Disability conference closed<\/p>\n<p>SANUR, Bali (JP): The three-day Asia-Pacific Conference for<br>\nPeople with Disability was closed here on Tuesday with more than<br>\n400 participants from 16 countries agreeing to adopt the Bali<br>\nDeclaration on barrier-free tourism.<\/p>\n<p>The participants noted in the declaration that most tourist<br>\nagencies in the region did not recognize the importance of<br>\nbarrier-free tourism. Reasons cited for this included the absence<br>\nof government policies and strategies, the lack of training for<br>\nthe tourist industry on access rights and the needs of disabled<br>\ntourists, and a shortage of tourist activities suitable for<br>\ndisabled people.<\/p>\n<p>The conference was held at the Grand Bali Beach Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>The declaration also noted that barrier-free tourism was<br>\nbecoming an increasingly important feature in a competitive<br>\nglobal tourist market and could serve as an effective tool for<br>\nenhancing the socioeconomic benefits of the tourist sector.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Culture and Tourism I Gde Ardika said when closing<br>\nthe conference that the Indonesian government would take several<br>\nshort-term measures, particularly in the tourist sector, to<br>\nimplement the declaration's recommendations. The programs will<br>\ninclude the improvement of tourist infrastructure and services,<br>\nand training for tourist workers.<\/p>\n<p>Ardika also stressed that tourist-based industries, such as<br>\nhotels and travel agents, should begin giving employment<br>\nopportunities to people with disabilities. \"Those who cannot walk<br>\ncould be hired as telephone or computer operators, for example.\"<\/p>\n<p>State-funded tourist schools and institutes will also create<br>\nspecial classes and training programs to improve student's skills<br>\nin dealing with disabled tourists' needs, he said.
