        "content": "<p>Direct presidential election<\/p>\n<p>From Kompas<\/p>\n<p>The present national political development is rather<br>\ndiscouraging because of the ongoing conflict between the<br>\nPresident and the House of Representatives. The House has issued<br>\nmemorandums of censure in its attempt to unseat President<br>\nAbdurrahman Wahid while the President will do everything to<br>\nmaintain his position until 2004. Is there a solution which<br>\nentails the lowest risk to settle this deep-seated conflict?<\/p>\n<p>My suggestion is that the General Elections Commission (KPU)<br>\nshould take the initiative to hold a general election, maybe in<br>\n2002 or 2004. This election, involving all the existing parties<br>\nin the country, will allow the people to directly elect a new<br>\npresident. It will be like a dual election as the voter will cast<br>\na ballot for his choice of president and also party. As for<br>\npresidential nominees, the number must be limited to two only.<br>\nHopefully, in this way, the new president will be truly<br>\nlegitimate, and the interest of the parties will continue to be<br>\nrepresented in the House.<\/p>\n<p>TAMIM BASUNI<\/p>\n<p>Pekalongan, Central Java<\/p>",
