Former General Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership, Din\nSyamsuddin, has called on Muslims in Indonesia to be wary of\nprovocateurs amid the ongoing war between Iran and the United\nStates-Israel. These provocateurs, he said, are attempting to incite\ndiscord by promoting narratives of differences between Sunni and\nShia.<\/p>\n
\u201cAgents of Israel, the buzzers. They are trying to inflame\ndifferences between Sunni and Shia,\u201d he stated during his meeting with\nIran\u2019s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, at Din Syamsuddin\u2019s\nresidence in South Jakarta on Friday, 3 April 2026.<\/p>\n
He urged Indonesian Muslims not to be easily provoked by narratives\nfrom these provocateurs. According to him, such actions are a strategy\nof divide et impera, or divide and conquer, in the style of colonial\noppressors.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo not be swayed or provoked by the divide et impera politics of\ncolonial oppressors, which pits us against each other,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Din Syamsuddin called for unity among Indonesian Muslims. He stated\nthat there is no need to pit differences between Sunni and Shia, or\nbetween Arabs and Persians, against each other. For him, all schools of\nthought teach brotherhood in faith.<\/p>\n
He also supported the proposal from the 48th Grand Imam of Al-Azhar,\nAhmad Muhammad Ahmad Ath-Thayyeb, who called for the unity of the Muslim\nummah.<\/p>\n
Iran\u2019s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, accused the\ndivision between Sunni and Shia of being engineered by Zionists amid the\nconflict between Iran and the United States (US) with Israel. The aim is\nto prevent Muslims from uniting.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen they are divided, they will be weak. When weak, they will be\nvery easy to destroy, even to eliminate,\u201d he said during his meeting\nwith Din Syamsuddin.<\/p>\n
He stated that Iran no longer discusses differences between Sunni and\nShia. Iranian society, he said, follows various schools of thought.\n\u201cThere are several regions where the majority are even Ahlussunnah wal\nJamaah,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
He also noted that Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah has representation in\nIran\u2019s parliament. Even Christian and Jewish groups have representation\nin Iran\u2019s parliament. \u201cThey realise that when missiles from Israel are\ndropped, these missiles do not choose between Sunni and Shia; everyone\nwill be hit,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n
Boroujerdi said that non-Muslim groups also play a role in Iran\u2019s\nmilitary armament to confront the United States and Israel. The Iranian\ngovernment refers to all groups as defenders of religion and the\nstate.<\/p>\n
He accused Israel of being the one that separates religions. They\nhave enacted a law that privileges Jewish people. No matter how serious\nthe violations by Jewish individuals, they will not be sentenced to\ndeath. \u201cMeanwhile, Palestinians who commit minor violations can be\nsentenced to death,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
