        "content": "<p>Din meets UAE officials about Kartini<\/p>\n<p>ABU DHABI (AFP): A senior Indonesian official has met with the<br>\nhead of courts and the attorney general of the Guld emirate of<br>\nFujairah to plead for the life of an Indonesian maid sentenced to<br>\ndeath by stoning for adultery.<\/p>\n<p>An Indonesian Embassy spokesman said Director General for<br>\nLabor Placement at Indonesia&apos;s Manpower Ministry, Din Syamsuddin,<br>\n&quot;conveyed the message that the government of Indonesia is<br>\nconcerned over Kartini binti Karim&apos;s case and hopes the court<br>\nwill lighten her sentence.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Embassy official Irwan Iding said Din had &quot;noted that Kartini<br>\nhas been in custody for nine months and gave birth to her baby<br>\ngirl in custody.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Kartini, 36, was condemned to death on Feb. 27 for alleged<br>\nadultery with an Indian male.<\/p>\n<p>Irwan said she gave birth a month ago and has been &quot;taking<br>\ncare of her baby girl in prison, where the facilities are good.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Since the verdict, &quot;we have been going to see her every day to<br>\ngive moral support,&quot; the embassy spokesman said, noting that the<br>\nmission was only alerted of her case after the trial in an<br>\nIslamic court.<\/p>\n<p>The court in Fujairah, on the Indian Ocean coast of the United<br>\nArab Emirates (UAE), acquitted her Muslim Indian lover in<br>\nabsentia after he reportedly fled the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesia Embassy has also hired a lawyer for the Kartini<br>\nand a translator as she does not speak the local Arabic dialect.<\/p>\n<p>The court in Fujairah has postponed an appeal hearings to<br>\ngivemore time for both sides to discuss and study the matter<br>\nfurther.<\/p>\n<p>Din was scheduled to leave the gulf state later Wednesday<br>\nevening.<\/p>\n<p>But officials in Jakarta have expressed confidence that<br>\nKartini&apos;s life will be spared.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian Foreign Minister Alwi Shihab has said he would also<br>\nlend his personnal assistance in the matter and intends to visit<br>\nthe emirates after performing the Haj pilgrimage later this<br>\nmonth.<\/p>",
