Dieng Temple lies in ruin<\/p>\n
DIENG, Central Java: Dieng Temple, the oldest temple in
\nCentral Java, has been waiting in vain for restoration because
\narcheologists have no idea of its original structure.<\/p>\n
The temple on the scenic Dieng plateau has remained in ruins
\nwhile experts and government officials have spent years seeking
\nforeign technical advise on the restoration.<\/p>\n
\"We will not stop seeking technical input to restore this
\nbeautiful temple,\" Banjarnegara regent Haji Nurachmad told The
\nJakarta Post last week.<\/p>\n
Local archeologists have gone all the way to the Netherlands
\nand Britain to get a mockup of the temple, but to no avail.<\/p>\n
The Dieng temple is one of the 17 Pendawa temples spread over
\nthe plateau, which is a beautiful holiday spot.<\/p>\n
Archeologists have said the temples were built in the seventh
\nand eighth centuries. The temples were all named after Javanese
\nshadow puppet characters.<\/p>\n
The Dieng temple was built as a Hindu monastery and place of
\nworship.<\/p>\n
The Banjarnegara tourist office's chief, Soeyanto, said Dutch
\narcheologist Van Erp had found the temples submerged in a lake.
\nYears later, a British expert found underground channels around
\nthe complex to discharge the water. (wah)<\/p>",
