Azis Tunny, The Jakarta Post, Ambon<\/p>\n<p>Five Maluku residents have died and 80 others have been admitted<br>\nto a medical clinic since an outbreak of diarrheal diseases was<br>\ndetected in the remote Serawaru area, Southeast Maluku regency,<br>\non Oct. 18.<\/p>\n<p>The regency has declared a civil emergency in the three<br>\nsubdistricts where the outbreak is centered. Eighty patients are<br>\nbeing treated at the Serawaru community health center for<br>\ndehydration.<\/p>\n<p>Administration secretary Piet Norimarna said the government<br>\nhad deployed a medical team to the area to treat the patients and<br>\nstop the outbreak from spreading.<\/p>\n<p>A health official with the administration, Justini Pawa, said<br>\nhis office had dispatched 60 crates of medicine to tackle<br>\ndehydration among the diarrhea patients. The medicine was sent on<br>\nSaturday by a fast boat and had reached the affected area on<br>\nWednesday, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Justini said outbreaks of diarrheal diseases were common in<br>\nthe dry season because of water sanitation problems, with clean<br>\nwater hard to find in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\"The problem is compounded by the fact that local residents<br>\nare generally not health-conscious,\" Justini said.<\/p>",
