Diarrhea kills eight people<\/p>\n
KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: At least eight people have died
\nand 70 others were treated at local community health centers
\nafter a diarrhea outbreak in South Central Timor regency, an
\nofficial said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Hundreds more have been evacuated since the outbreak, which
\nfollowed flooding, hit the subdistrict early this month.<\/p>\n
The head of disease prevention and eradication at the regency
\nhealth office, Bartholomeus Liufet, said three remote villages of
\nTioneke, Tuafanu and Kiufatu were most heavily affected.<\/p>\n
Two of the fatalities were aged under 12 years, and the rest
\nfrom 15 to 85.<\/p>\n
\"Wells and toilets in those areas have been badly
\ncontaminated, but residents find it difficult to change their
\nhabit of drinking unboiled water,\" Liufet said.<\/p>\n
He said medical workers were late in assisting the victims
\nbecause of the villages' distance of 80 kilometers from the
\nregency capital of Soe.<\/p>\n
Regent Wilem Nope visited the villages on Thursday and sent a
\nmedical assistance team. He also ordered the local health office
