The Tangerang regency council is summoning two developers to
\nanswer allegations their coastal reclamation projects have
\nirrevocably damaged the environment and destroyed the life of a
\nfishing community.<\/p>\n
Commission for developmental affairs councilor Bahrum said on
\nSaturday that PT Koperasi Pasir Putih and PT Parung Harapan had
\nbeen summoned to a hearing with the commission on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\"We will ask for clarification whether the two developers have
\nmade evaluations about the environmental impact of their
\nreclamation projects or not,\" Bahrun said.<\/p>\n
He said the council had found evidence in November that the
\nprojects had destroyed mangroves, coral reefs and marine life
\nduring the past three years and had prompted fishermen in the
\nDadap village, Kosambi, to leave their profession and become
\nscavengers.<\/p>\n
Fellow councillor Al Mansur said the two companies had to
\nabide by existing environmental regulations when reclaiming the
\narea.<\/p>\n
\"We hope the two companies abide by the rules of the game in
\nreclaiming the beach and they must cope with the negative impact
\nthat the project has caused,\" he said without elaborating.<\/p>\n
The two developers started to reclaim the coastline in 2001.<\/p>\n
PT Koperasi Pasir Putih plans to build a five-hectare
\nrecreational and tourist resort, while PT Parung Harapan will
\nbuild a luxurious housing estate and warehouse complex on another
\nfive hectares of land.<\/p>",
