Developer summoned over floods<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja ordered the South
\nJakarta mayor yesterday to summon the management of a private
\ndeveloper whose project allegedly triggers flooding in Guntur
\nsubdistrict, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The governor ordered the mayor to summon the developer after
\nthe subdistrict chief complained that a project owned by PT
\nKuningan Persada causes problems in the residential area.<\/p>\n
"I want the mayor to summon the developer to settle the
\nmatter. A private developer is also obliged to fulfill its social
\nfunction," Surjadi said in his weekly rounds.<\/p>\n
He also urged the subdistrict head not to be in awe of the
\ndeveloper.<\/p>\n
"You have to voice your demand because you represent the
\npeople's interests. Don't be afraid just because the developer
\nuses a Mercedes-Benz," he said.<\/p>\n
The subdistrict head, Mugeni Sanan, told the governor that
\nmany gutters in the area do not function properly because of
\nsloppy work done by the developer.<\/p>\n
The gutters are obstructed with mud and garbage and as a
\nresult the area is always inundated with water when it rains, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The developer plans to build a superblock on a 24-hectare plot
\non Jl. Rasuna Said, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The project has caused various problems since 50 families
\nrefused the compensation rate offer by the developer for their
\nland.<\/p>\n
The developer set compensation at Rp 850,000 (US$370) per
\nsquare meter and later increased it to Rp 1 million.<\/p>\n
The residents claimed the developer forced them to accept the
\namount by intimidating them into leaving the site. (yns)<\/p>",
