Developer blames deaths on contractors<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The developer of a construction project in West
\nJakarta blamed the project's frequent on-site accidents on its
\ncontractors.<\/p>\n
The contractors had failed to instruct their workers to wear
\nsafety gears, Tasril Jamal, a representative of the developer, PT
\nMulia Inti Pelangi, said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Three workers were killed over the weekend at the Taman
\nAnggrek Mall and condominium project on Jl. S. Parman, Slipi.<\/p>\n
Police said there have been 19 accidents at the project since
\nit began last year. But Tasril said three of the workers were not
\nemployed at the project, but outsiders who entered the project
\nsite.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, Wastri plunged to his death from the 21st floor.
\nAnother worker, Sutrisno, was electrocuted and died later during
\nmedical treatment. The next day, another worker, Amin died after
\nfalling from the 31st floor.<\/p>\n
The developer said it had repeatedly told project contractors
\nto enforce the use of safety gears for the workers, said Tasril.<\/p>\n
He said overseers who failed to enforce the use of safety
\ngears for their workers would be dismissed, adding most of the
\nworkers did not like wearing safety gears because they said it
\nhampered their movement.<\/p>\n
A recent police report stated on-site accidents have claimed
\nthe lives of 19 people since the project started in 1995, the
\nlatest taking place over the weekend which causing the death of
\nthree workers.<\/p>\n
Two people died after falling from the high rise construction
\nin 1996 while trying to steal construction materials. They were
\nSudito and Lusiana.<\/p>\n
He said another worker died on-site due to untreated tetanus
\nin the same year.<\/p>\n
Tasril said the estimated number of 11,000 construction
\nworkers had posed quite a problem to supervisors to closely check
\non the workers' safety.<\/p>\n
However, one of the contractors' representative said PT Mulia
\nmust take part in guaranteeing workers safety too, because the
\ninvolvement of many contractors makes it hard to coordinate the
\nworkers.<\/p>\n
"Relying solely on the contractors will not help reduce the
\nnumber of accidents unless the enforcement comes from PT Mulia as
\nwell," Supriyono of PT Bumindo Ganesha Lalolo said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Supriyono cited the Danamon project done by another developer
\nwhich has made an effective solution to stop accidents on
\nbuilding construction by dismissing workers who do not wear
\nsafety gears while at work.<\/p>\n
He added the City Manpower Office should conduct an on-site
\ncheck periodically to prevent more accidents.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman Major Nyoman Suriasta said he had not
\nreceived reports on the accidents.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the latest data of the City Manpower Office showed
\nthat 40 cases out of the 134 work-related accidents occurred at
