\u2018Devastated\u2019: Police corporal tells court how he shot dead Ulu Tiram\nattacker after seeing colleagues killed<\/p>\n
Johor police officer Mohd Khairul Azhar Abbi Paisa was testifying as\nthe first prosecution witness on the opening day of the trial of five\nfamily members of the alleged attacker Radin Luqman Radin Imran, who was\nalso killed in the pre-dawn incident on May 17, 2024.<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR: A police corporal who responded to a suspected terror\nattack on a Johor police post in Ulu Tiram told the Kuala Lumpur High\nCourt on Wednesday (Apr 8) that he saw two of his colleagues killed and\nfired the shot that brought the suspect down moments later.<\/p>\n
Mohd Khairul Azhar Abbi Paisa, 25, was testifying as the first\nprosecution witness on the opening day of the trial of five family\nmembers of the alleged attacker Radin Luqman Radin Imran, who was also\nkilled in the pre-dawn incident on May 17, 2024, according to local\nmedia.<\/p>\n
The accused are Radin Luqman\u2019s father, Radin Imran Mohd Yasin, 64;\nhis Singaporean wife Rosna Jantan, 61; and their three other children -\nRadin Romyullah, 36, Mariah, 21 and Farhah Sobrina, 25 - who face a\ntotal of nine terrorism-related charges, including for allegedly\npropagating IS teachings.<\/p>\n
They were charged in June 2024.<\/p>\n
In the Ulu Tiram incident, a police officer was fatally stabbed by a\n21-year-old man later identified as Radin Luqman, who reportedly entered\nthe station wielding a machete.<\/p>\n
A fight then ensued at the car park area of the station between the\nattacker and the police officers, including the witness, which resulted\nin the death of another officer.<\/p>\n
Authorities had said that the assailant, Radin Luqman, was believed\nto be a Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) member attempting to seize weapons stored\nat the police station.<\/p>\n
Khairul said that his colleague Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, was\nattacked on the face, mouth and ear, while fellow officer Muhamad Syafiq\nAhmad Said, 24, was shot in the head, local media reported.<\/p>\n
Both died in the incident.<\/p>\n
Recounting the incident, Khairul told the High Court that he and\nanother corporal, Hasif Roslan, were conducting crime prevention patrols\nin the Ulu Tiram area near the police station at about 2.30am when they\nreceived instructions from the officer-in-charge, Mohd Hisham Ezahar, to\nreturn to the station following an attack.<\/p>\n
They rushed to the scene in a Toyota Hilux and upon arrival, found\nthe surroundings dim and quiet, said Khairul.<\/p>\n
\u201cI heard Lance Corporal Mohamad Aznel Mat Salleh shouting for us to\nretreat from the front of the station and informing us that Ahmad Azza\nFahmi had been attacked,\u201d Khairul said, as quoted by Malaysian news\noutlet Bernama.<\/p>\n
Aznel was another officer who was at the station during the\nincident.<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw Azza lying between the barracks and the station building,\ncovered in blood with slash wounds across his face from ear to mouth,\u201d\nKhairul said during the examination-in-chief procedure in court, as\nquoted by Free Malaysia Today.<\/p>\n
Khairul, together with Aznel and Syafiq, the other policeman who was\nlater killed, then moved to the front of the station near a vending\nmachine to take cover.<\/p>\n
Aznel then informed the two of them that a man had emerged from the\nbarracks area and fired shots at them under low-light conditions. Aznel\nthen instructed Khairul and Syafiq to move to the back of the station to\nassess the situation and locate the attacker Radin Luqman, who allegedly\nfired at them again.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe then ran back and regrouped behind the station chief\u2019s office\nbefore Aznel went out to seek assistance while Hasif, Syafiq and I moved\nto the front of the station near an armoured vehicle for cover,\u201d Khairul\ntold the court, as quoted by Bernama.<\/p>\n
Radin Luqman had allegedly fired shots at the three of them while\nthey were taking cover. Hasif then moved towards the gate of the police\nstation to draw the attacker\u2019s attention and was shot in the left\nshoulder and hip, said Khairul.<\/p>\n
Syafiq was then shot in the head and Radin Luqman allegedly attempted\nto seize his weapon, a Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun that was\ncapable of automatic fire.<\/p>\n
\u201cI then fired at the man (Radin Luqman) after seeing him trying to\ntake the weapon from Muhammed Syafiq. The shot hit the attacker but he\nwas still moving,\u201d Khairul said, as quoted by Bernama.<\/p>\n
\u201cI attempted to fire a second shot but my pistol jammed. After\nclearing it, I fired again and hit the attacker. I then saw him lying\nnext to Syafiq in front of the left tyre of the armoured vehicle,\u201d he\nsaid, adding that Radin Luqman was dressed in dark clothing, wearing a\nmask and carrying a backpack.<\/p>\n
Khairul said that assistance arrived at about 3.30am and at around\n7am on the same day, he was called to identify the two victims who were\nkilled - Ahmad Azza and Syafiq - as well as the attacker.<\/p>\n
Hasif, who was injured, was rushed to the hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n
The suspect was later identified as Radin Luqman, which led to the\narrest of five of his family members.<\/p>\n
The New Straits Times (NST) reported that Khairul became visibly\nemotional when asked about the impact of the incident.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was traumatised and devastated. They were not just colleagues, but\nalso my friends. Now they are gone forever,\u201d he told the court.<\/p>\n
FAMILY MEMBERS MAINTAIN NOT GUILTY PLEAS ON CHARGES OF INCITING\nTERRORISM<\/p>\n
Radin Luqman\u2019s five family members - his parents and three siblings -\nwere also present in the dock during their trial.<\/p>\n
The family members maintained their not guilty pleas after the\ncharges were read out to them again.<\/p>\n
Radin Luqman\u2019s father, Radin Imran, faces four charges, including\nunder Section 130G (a) of the Penal Code (Act 574), for inciting\nterrorism by promoting the ideology of violence associated with Islamic\nState (IS).<\/p>\n
If found guilty of that, he may be jailed for up to 30 years and\nliable to a fine.<\/p>\n
He was reported to have propagated IS teachings among his family\nmembers \u2013 including the alleged attacker Radin Luqman \u2013 between the end\nof 2014 and May 17, 2024.<\/p>\n
