        "content": "<p>Deutsche Telekom eying telephone project in Java<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Deutsche Telekom (DT) of Germany, in cooperation<br>\nwith Indonesian partners, is optimistic about winning a contract<br>\nto establish 500,000 telephone lines in Java.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are ready to install 500,000 telephone lines in West or<br>\nCentral Java,\" said Gerd Tenzer, a DT executive.<\/p>\n<p>Tenzer, who accompanied German Minister of Post and<br>\nTelecommunications Wolfgang Botsch at yesterday's press<br>\nconference, said that his company will provide technology for the<br>\ntelephone lines.<\/p>\n<p>Botsch ended his three-day visit in Indonesia yesterday,<br>\nduring which time he witnessed the signing of a draft agreement<br>\non the acquisition of a 25-percent stake, worth $586 million, of<br>\nPT Satelindo, a private firm operating satellites, cellular<br>\nmobile telephones and international calls.<\/p>\n<p>\"We will discuss financial affairs for the telephone project<br>\nsoon,\" Tenzer said.<\/p>\n<p>The government is currently examining bids from 12 consortia<br>\nfor the establishment of two million telephone lines during the<br>\ncurrent Sixth Five-Year Development Plan (Repelita VI) period,<br>\nwhich began in April 1994.<\/p>\n<p>The government is likely to announce at least five winners<br>\nfrom the 12 consortia within six months.<\/p>\n<p>During the Repelita VI period the government will install five<br>\nmillion telephone lines, of which two million lines will be<br>\noffered to private companies, while the other three million -- in<br>\nJakarta and East Java -- will be assigned to the state-owned<br>\ndomestic telecommunications firm PT Telkom.<\/p>\n<p>The government chose the 12 consortia last September to take<br>\npart in the tenders for the installation of the two million<br>\ntelephone lines. The consortia are required to include domestic<br>\nfirms, cooperatives and overseas telecommunications firms.<\/p>\n<p>However, executives of the Indonesian Association of<br>\nTelecommunications Firms warned recently that the government<br>\nshould be very careful in choosing the winners because not all of<br>\nthe consortia have conducted well-prepared surveys.(icn)<\/p>",
