Deutsche Telekom eying telephone project in Java<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Deutsche Telekom (DT) of Germany, in cooperation
\nwith Indonesian partners, is optimistic about winning a contract
\nto establish 500,000 telephone lines in Java.<\/p>\n
\"We are ready to install 500,000 telephone lines in West or
\nCentral Java,\" said Gerd Tenzer, a DT executive.<\/p>\n
Tenzer, who accompanied German Minister of Post and
\nTelecommunications Wolfgang Botsch at yesterday's press
\nconference, said that his company will provide technology for the
\ntelephone lines.<\/p>\n
Botsch ended his three-day visit in Indonesia yesterday,
\nduring which time he witnessed the signing of a draft agreement
\non the acquisition of a 25-percent stake, worth $586 million, of
\nPT Satelindo, a private firm operating satellites, cellular
\nmobile telephones and international calls.<\/p>\n
\"We will discuss financial affairs for the telephone project
\nsoon,\" Tenzer said.<\/p>\n
The government is currently examining bids from 12 consortia
\nfor the establishment of two million telephone lines during the
\ncurrent Sixth Five-Year Development Plan (Repelita VI) period,
\nwhich began in April 1994.<\/p>\n
The government is likely to announce at least five winners
\nfrom the 12 consortia within six months.<\/p>\n
During the Repelita VI period the government will install five
\nmillion telephone lines, of which two million lines will be
\noffered to private companies, while the other three million -- in
\nJakarta and East Java -- will be assigned to the state-owned
\ndomestic telecommunications firm PT Telkom.<\/p>\n
The government chose the 12 consortia last September to take
\npart in the tenders for the installation of the two million
\ntelephone lines. The consortia are required to include domestic
\nfirms, cooperatives and overseas telecommunications firms.<\/p>\n
However, executives of the Indonesian Association of
\nTelecommunications Firms warned recently that the government
\nshould be very careful in choosing the winners because not all of
\nthe consortia have conducted well-prepared surveys.(icn)<\/p>",
