        "content": "<p>Deutsche Press Agentur<br>\nTokyo<\/p>\n<p>The business sentiment index for Japanese firms operating in five <br>\nmajor Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) economies <br>\nhas increased sharply in May, according to a survey released <br>\nThursday.<\/p>\n<p>The government-backed Japan External Trade Organization's <br>\n(JETRO) monthly survey measures year-on-year changes for the <br>\nupcoming months' business outlook.<\/p>\n<p>The index for Japan firms operating in the Philippines rose <br>\n16.1 points to 1.9, moving into positive territory for the first <br>\ntime since last June.<\/p>\n<p>Japanese businesses in the Philippines improved primarily in <br>\nthe fields of electric and electronic machinery, where the index <br>\nrose by double-digit figures, JETRO said.<\/p>\n<p>The index in Indonesia rose 3.4 points to 2.6, also moving <br>\ninto positive territory for the first time since last August. <br>\nImprovements were seen primarily in transportation machinery.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand rose 5.7 points to 10.4, continuing to improve after <br>\nentering the positive side of the index last month.<\/p>\n<p>Indices in Singapore and Malaysia, although still negative, <br>\njumped by 13.5 points to -0.7 and by 15.8 points to -1.6, <br>\nrespectively.<\/p>\n<p>The business outlook over the next two to three months <br>\nremained positive in all ASEAN countries - Indonesia, Malaysia, <br>\nMyanmar (Burma), the Philippines, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, <br>\nLaos, Singapore and Vietnam - for a second straight month, <br>\nsuggesting that continued improvement in business sentiment is on <br>\nthe way, JETRO said.<\/p>\n<p>Both Japanese manufacturers and non-manufacturers in all <br>\ncountries showed improvements due to higher expectations for an <br>\nexport recovery.<\/p>\n<p>JETRO has conducted the survey in the first week of every <br>\nmonth since June 2001. Firms are asked to compare earnings <br>\nprospects, supply and demand, inventory, sales prices and <br>\naccounts receivable with the same period the year previous.<\/p>\n<p>Replies are limited to better, same or worse than a year <br>\nearlier. The index totals the difference between positive and <br>\nnegative responses.<\/p>",
