Deterring street criminals<\/p>\n

The public is delighted to witness successful police
\noperations against criminals, as frequently reported on
\ntelevision, or watch bandits being caught red-handed and seized
\nby local people.<\/p>\n
A newspaper recently reported the capture of three criminals
\nin their attempted holdup of a public transport vehicle in
\nJakarta at night. The three, two of whom were recidivists, were
\nseized after a passenger resisted their threat and shouted for
\nhelp, which was responded to by the local community.<\/p>\n
Responsiveness and mutual help among citizens in the face
\ncriminal action should indeed be further boosted, while the
\ncourage of certain individuals to fight thugs and seek community
\nassistance deserves appreciation.<\/p>\n
With that kind of public response and solidarity in times of
\ndanger, criminals will be deterred. But we all should be highly
\nalert to muggers' attempts, when under pressure, to act and shout
\nas if they were being robbed themselves.<\/p>\n
