Detergent level in water manageable: Supplier<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A tap water company admitted Thursday that its
\nraw water had become contaminated with detergent chemicals, but
\nassured that the pollution was still within a tolerable level.<\/p>\n
\"Our problem is turbidity, not detergent fusion. Detergent
\nlevels in our raw supplies can still be managed,\" the city's
\nforeign partner water firm PT Pam Lyonaisse Jaya (Palyja)'s
\nspokeswoman Maria Sidabutar said.<\/p>\n
She told reporters that the company's raw water, taken from
\nthe Jatiluhur dam in West Java, was very muddy at times,
\nespecially in the rainy season, but it was still under control.<\/p>\n
She was commenting on a report that raw water used by tap
\nwater firms across the country, including city tap water firm PAM
\nJaya, was believed to have been contaminated by a detergent
\nfusion.<\/p>\n
Detergent fusion, according to a report based on a study
\nconducted by the University of Indonesia, is carcinogenic,
\nmeaning it could cause cancer if it remains in the human body for
\nan extended period.<\/p>\n
The study suggested that detergent had contaminated well water
\nand raw water due to a large increase in the use of detergent
\nproducts, such as soaps and shampoo.<\/p>\n
It is believed that no tap water firms here have special
\nequipment to break down the detergent fusion as the machinery is
\nvery expensive.<\/p>\n
\"So far, we don't know the name of the equipment,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Maria revealed that her company has implemented a standard way
\nof breaking down the detergent fusion, which involves adding
\nactive carbon powder when processing its raw water in the
\ncompany's water installations.<\/p>\n
\"Our water production still complies with the standards for
\nclean water set by the Ministry of Health. It is tested
\ncontinually,\" she said.<\/p>\n
She said that every month the company tested its water at 221
\npoints in the city, but admitted that it was just a general test,
\nnot specifically aimed at testing detergent levels.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, city administration spokesman Muhayat could only
\nrespond to the problem by alleging that the study could have been
\nsponsored by producers of a special machine, claiming that it
\ncould break down detergent fusion.<\/p>\n
\"I don't know whether a producer of the machine was behind the
\nstudy,\" Muhayat said jokingly, adding that many studies were
\nbelieved to be sponsored by certain products.<\/p>\n
Palyja, a subsidiary of French Lyonnaisse des Eaux, was
\nappointed to manage customers in the eastern part of Jakarta. It
\nmanages three water installations in Penjernihan, Central
\nJakarta, Pulo Gadung and Buaran in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
To manage customers in the western part of Jakarta, the
\nadministration appointed PT Thames Pam Jaya, a subsidiary of
\nBritish Thames Water International.<\/p>\n
Most raw water supplied to customers in the western part of
\nJakarta was taken from Cisadane river, Tangerang, Banten. Both
\nPalyja and TPJ have more than 600,000 customers. (jun)<\/p>",
